Health Testing: Raising Golden Retrievers with Care, Purpose, and Transparency
At White Magic Golden Retrievers, health testing is one of the most important parts of our breeding program. Our goal is to raise beautiful, well-tempered Golden Retrievers while making thoughtful breeding decisions that support long-term health, soundness, and quality of life.
Golden Retrievers are a beloved breed, but like all purebred dogs, they can be predisposed to certain inherited health conditions. Responsible breeding begins before a litter is ever planned. That is why we complete recommended health clearances on our breeding dogs and carefully review pedigrees, structure, temperament, and genetic compatibility before making breeding decisions.
Our Commitment to Health
We believe families deserve transparency. Health testing does not guarantee that a puppy will never develop a health issue, but it greatly improves the odds of producing healthy, sound puppies when used responsibly.
Before being included in our breeding program, our dogs are evaluated for the core health areas recommended for Golden Retrievers, including:
Hips
Golden Retrievers can be prone to hip dysplasia. Our breeding dogs receive hip evaluations through OFA and/or PennHIP when age appropriate. Final OFA hip certification is completed at 24 months or older.
Elbows
Elbow dysplasia is another orthopedic condition that responsible breeders screen for. Our dogs receive elbow evaluations through OFA once they are old enough for final certification.
Beyond Basic Testing
In addition to orthopedic clearances, we may also use DNA testing as another tool in our breeding program. DNA testing can help identify whether a dog is clear, a carrier, or affected for certain inherited conditions known in Golden Retrievers.
DNA testing is valuable, but it is not a substitute for complete health clearances. A truly responsible program looks at the whole dog: health, temperament, structure, movement, pedigree, and genetic diversity.
The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals’ CHIC program recognizes dogs that complete breed-specific health screening protocols, and the OFA works with parent clubs to maintain recommended testing guidelines for each breed.

Our puppies are raised to become beloved family companions. The decisions we make as breeders affect not only one litter, but the future of the breed. Health testing helps us make informed choices and gives our puppy families greater confidence in the care behind their new family member.
Responsible breeding means:
choosing breeding dogs carefully, completing appropriate health clearances, studying pedigrees, avoiding preventable genetic risks when possible, and being honest with families about both the strengths and realities of the breed.
The Golden Retriever Club of America identifies hip and elbow screenings as key health clearances for the parents of a litter.

We are happy to discuss the health testing completed on the parents of each litter. When available, health clearances are attached to each profile for our Sires and Dams.
